SEDGEFORD HISTORICAL  AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROJECT

F.A.Q.

Please read the following carefully before emailing enquiries

When does the project run?
We have a main excavation season which runs for 6 weeks in July and August. For more info see our Summer FAQ page. The dates for 2007 are Sunday 8th of July to Friday 17th August.

We also have an shorter Easter season where in 2007 our main activity will be post-excavation work (Sunday 1st April to Friday 13th April).  There will be Field Walking in 2007 starting Easter Sunday (8th April), other activities, such as geophysical surveying and post-excavation and analysis of human remains, may take place in week 1. Please note NO overnight accommodation can be provided at Easter. There are kitchen and toilet facilities available in our HQ for Easter day attendees. Please contact us for further information as the Easter Season is subject to change.

How can I Join in?
For joining SHARP during the summer see our Summer FAQ page. For further details of Summer courses and Easter events consult our prospectus. The prospectus includes details for everyone wishing to join the project, not just course attendees. The application form is the same for both.

Is SHARP open to visitors?
The site is open to the general public from 11am to 4pm Sunday to Friday during our 6 week summer season. Except on Friday pm, there is no official tour however on most days you will be met be a knowledgeable volunteer or supervisor who will be able to tell you about the site and the main activities going on at the time of your visit. Each Friday at approximately 3.30pm we have a guided site tour which includes talks given by our volunteers on different areas of the project. This tour is primarily aimed at all on-site volunteers and supervisors to keep everyone up to date with all aspects of the project, however it is also open to the general public and is very popular. Please note visitors are shown around the edge of the excavation site, it is not possible for day visitors to participate in digging or to walk on the site directly.

Please note - parking is very limited on site. If you wish to come as a party of more than one family it is advisable to contact us first. It is ESSENTIAL that coach or minibus parties do not come without prior arrangement.

Each year we also have an OPEN DAY with extended activities and displays suitable for the whole family. In 2007 this will run on Sunday 29th July.

We also run a day programme for local schools during the last two weeks of summer term.  School authorities should contact us if they wish to participate (places are very limited).

What about other times of the year?
The excavation site is only open to visitors during the 6 week summer period. For the rest of the year it is completely covered over and is on private land to which there is no general access. Of course, the village of Sedgeford welcomes visitors all year round, however there are no archaeological artefacts on display from the project.

Do you welcome researchers?
We try to accommodate researchers where we can but our resources are very limited. Each year we have at least one or two university students with us in the summer working towards undergraduate or master's dissertations. If you wish to participate in a dissertation or other relevant research please contact us with a detailed outline of your research proposal if possible. All researchers to SHARP during the summer season will need to apply to join us as a volunteer and pay the appropriate facilities costs.
