SEDGEFORD HISTORICAL  AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROJECT

 THE "FRIENDS OF SHARP" ORGANISATION

The Friends of SHARP have a history almost as long as the Project itself. A few weeks before the first season of excavation began in July 1996 a meeting was arranged to take place in Sedgeford Church to which everyone in the village was invited, as was anyone else interested from anywhere the Eastern Daily Press, the Lynn News and Radio Norfolk could reach. The turnout amazed everyone and so much interest was expressed that it was decided to form a supporting body for the Project, our Friends.

Friends come from all age groups, occupations and interests not just archaeology. Some of those who came to the first meeting became committee members and eventually, having obtained charitable status for the project, its Trustees. Others were interested in other activities, archaeological excavation of course, but field walking, metal detecting, finds processing, historical research, building surveying, and a myriad or other jobs are done by Friends. Not all Friends are active. Some are older, some live too far away, several are people who used to live in Sedgeford or even whose ancestors lived in Sedgeford, there is a Friend in Australia who is delighted to think she is related to a man transported to Australia from Sedgeford in the early nineteenth century for sheep stealing! - but all Friends are interested in what we are doing and wishing to support the project in its aim to present research archaeology and history which is accessible to all and by joining Friends they add their moral and financial support to SHARP.

For a modest yearly subscription our Friends inject a useful contribution towards the running of SHARP and in return they receive a copy of the annual Interim Report.
