During our
Open Day
- Why
not go on a tour of the site? Tours are given by one of the
diggers who have excavated on the site. You’ll be able to see
excavation in progress on the site and get a feel for what ‘real
archaeology’ is all about.
- Children
can take part in activities such as trying on Saxon outfits (a
fantastic photo opportunity for mums and dads!) and having a go at
ancient writing with a wax tablet. Kids also have the opportunity
to have a go at ‘the real thing’ in the archaeological sandpit
where treasure can be unearthed and get ‘hands on’ with some
of the finds from site in ‘sort the find’.
- We
have plenty of activities in the marquee, such as the local
history forum, a spinning display, and Iron Age face painting for
children. Along with stalls of books and cakes, which always prove
a hit with visitors and diggers alike!
- You
can win the chance to have a day digging on site and children can
have a go at games such as ‘torc-la’ or throwing a sponge at a
digger strapped in the pillories.
- There
is also plenty to entertain adults, so if you are interested in
finding out more about the serious side of archaeology, we have
many displays explaining what we have done over the years and some
of the finds from site are on display. This year, some of the our
experts will be giving short talks through the day, so if you want
the chance to interview an expert about your chosen field, be sure
to get to site early.
- Adults
and children alike can find out more about the Saxon population of
Sedgeford when they visit our Human remains department. Find out
how to age and sex a skeleton and what diseases and injuries the
Saxons of Sedgeford incurred.
